Joels Hills Johnson was born in Grafton, Massachusetts, son of Ezekiel Johnson and Julia Hills. His wife, Annie Pixley Johnson, was born in Canaan, New Hampshire, daughter of Timothy Johnson and Demmis Welch. Marriage and family life; conversion to Mormonism, 1831; activities in Kirtland, Ohio; missionary experiences in Ohio, 1835; organization of Kirtland Camp; death of wife; marriage to Janet Fife; exodus west; plural marriage to Margaret Threlkeld, 1860; settlement in Johnson, Utah.
